Experience, Background and Services:
I am a Criminologist and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I have also been appointed as the Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Law from 1st March 2023.
My core skills include: research and analysis; report writing and editing; lecturing and public speaking, and advisory work. My specialization lies in the areas of human trafficking, crime, gender, sexual violence, women's rights, human rights, migrant smuggling, post-colonial theories, policing, victimization, terrorism, and international crimes.
I obtained by PhD in Criminology from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, my LLM in International Human Rights Law from University of Leicester, UK and my LLB with Honours and Diploma in Sharia Law and Practice from the International Islamic University of Malaysia. I was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1997 and have 17 years of legal practice in the Malaysian courts.
My thesis entitled "Sex Trafficking, Victimization And Agency: The Experiences Of Migrant Women in Malaysia draws upon the accounts and experiences of migrant women who have been trafficked into Malaysia for the purpose of sexual exploitation. The thesis delved into the tension between choice and coercion in sex work, and proffered an alternative understanding on victim's agency. My thesis received high praises from international scholars and is often cited by academics, NGOs and state agencies in their work and fight against human trafficking.
While I was pursuing my PhD in New Zealand, I was also appointed as a Teaching Fellow by the Institute of Criminology, School of Social and Cultural Studies, Victoria University of Wellington from 2018 - 2020. Among the courses taught were: Human Trafficking; Sexual Violence; and Criminal Psychology. In 2019, I was appointed as a victim liaison by the Ministry of Justice in New Zealand to assist the victims of the Christchurch terrorist mosque attack during the sentencing hearing of Brenton Tarrant (accused) at the Christchurch High Court. My task was to communicate and accompany the victims from Malaysia and Singapore and ensure that they understood whatever transpired during the hearing. I was also frequently invited by the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs of New Zealand to participate in roundtable discussions on matters regarding human trafficking, and family violence among ethnic communities.
Throughout my career, I have conducted extensive research on human trafficking, victimization, incarceration, gender, sexual violence, terrorism, and international crimes. Taking an approach to work directly with offenders and victims of crime, I have undertaken studies on prolonged harms of human trafficking and sexual violence.
I currently teach courses on Human Trafficking, Women In The Criminal Justice System, Forensic Evidence, and Human Rights at Universiti Malaya to the postgraduate students. I am also currently supervising a substantial number of PhD and Master students on topics relating to criminal justice, human trafficking, victimization and human rights.
Given my dedication and compassion on countering human trafficking activities and elevating the quality of protection of victims of trafficking, I was awarded a Grant by the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. The Grant allowed me to train law enforcers and protection officers on anti-human trafficking prevention, prosecution and protection, and conduct youth awareness program at Universities.
Apart from anti-human trafficking initiatives, I am also frequently invited by the United Nations Office Of Drugs And Crime to provide training on countering violent extremism and terrorism to the Royal Malaysia Police and CSOs. Lectures presented include topics on the nexus between human trafficking and terrorism, human trafficking and organized crime, human rights and terrorism, gendered approach in countering terrorism, and evidence and judicial cases in terrorism.
I have authored two reference books on human trafficking one of which can be used as a source of reference to all enforcement agencies. I have also published articles and book chapters on human trafficking, victimization and gender, and I continue to give talks and public lectures related to the same.
